A pathway with visible prerequisites

Start from your actual experience and ask the provider to confirm the next step.

A source to keep.
A question to take further.

01

Describe the starting point

Write an honest account of the tasks you have actually undertaken and the setting in which you learned. Observation, supervised practice and independent work should not be blended into an impressive but unclear summary. A precise starting point gives the responsible provider a better basis for discussing prerequisites than a broad label such as beginner or advanced used without any supporting context.

02

Name the next task

Choose the particular activity or subject you want to understand better. A broad ambition can hide several different learning needs. Naming a task helps you ask whether the proposed course addresses it and which prior experience is expected. The question should remain open to provider review rather than assuming that a course title establishes the appropriate next stage for every person.

03

Ask what the prerequisite means

A prerequisite may need explanation in relation to the actual programme. Ask the responsible provider what evidence it considers and how it reviews a learner’s starting point. Do not invent an equivalence between another course, informal practice and an approved requirement. This reading exercise can help prepare the question, but it cannot decide admission, grant an exemption or recognise someone’s previous learning.

04

Keep different arrangements separate

A suggested reading route, a teaching programme and a formal progression decision do different jobs. A sequence on a website can make a subject easier to explore without becoming an approved curriculum. Keep the actual provider’s requirements and review process beside your notes. If the pathway includes another organisation, clarify its separate responsibilities instead of treating the whole sequence as one guaranteed arrangement.

05

Read the transition carefully

Ask what would need to happen between the present task and the proposed next step. That could involve information, a provider review or an authorised assessment, depending on the actual arrangements. Record what has been confirmed and what remains a question. A tidy diagram should not hide a gap or imply that progression has already been approved when no responsible decision has been made.

06

Retain a revisable account

Your understanding of the next step may change after a provider discussion. Keep the source and the reason for a revision visible. A private pathway note supports a current conversation; it is not an institutional learner record or an admission result. Retain the actual written terms through the appropriate process and leave the eligibility decision with the organisation responsible for it.
